Eighteen years after installation, piping, check valves and gate valves are replaced February 18 at one of Stonington’s main sewer pumping stations near the post office. The pumps themselves have recently been replaced, but when they couldn’t keep up in the torrential January 25 rainstorm, it became plain that the further improvements had to happen, according to Gay Atkinson. Earlier in the week, because of increased water usage, water district superintendent Roger Stone found a leak in a 1904 water main at Seabreeze Avenue, where a crack had formed three-quarters of the way around the old pipe, letting go a fan of water. He said it was not part of the phantom leak the town is trying to find.
