Representatives from Birdsacre in Ellsworth were among those at the Island Commsunity Center during Winterfest last weekend. Their presentation on owls kept the packed room rapt with attention. The Healthy Island Project-sponsored event including a chili cookoff, magic show, cookout, fireworks, special performances, workshops and information booths—all designed to get Islanders outside and busy during winter. Yep, that’s an igloo, rising from the snow at the Stonington ballfield. The event was one of the workshops at the fifth annual Winterfest last weekend, which featured a variety of events sponsored by Healthy Island Project to get Islanders outside and busy during winter.

Dr. Bert Yankielun cuts a block of snow to start the igloo Islanders will build during the fifth annual Winterfest last weekend. Yankielun, with helpers, shoveled a lot of snow the day before the event and tamped it by walking on it with snowshoes to harden. He noted that our snow would not support the igloo-building process without the extra work. The blocks were then cut from the tamped snow. Photo by Lydia MacDonald
