The Deer Isle-Stonington varsity cheerleaders earned the 2010 runners-up title for Class D at the MPA East/West Regional Cheerleading Competition January 23 at the Bangor Auditorium, according to a news release.

The squad is led by veteran coach Kimberley Larsen, who led her team to the first MPA Championships 25 years ago, the press release reports.

The 15-member team has five senior members—Kalsea Cote, Samantha Dunham, captain Layla Eaton, Goldie Garcia and co-captain Stormi Hardy; junior Kelsey Davis and sophomore Emma Merritt; and eight freshmen—Dakota Brown, Sarah Burgess, Sara Eaton, Amber Jones, Danielle Powers, Paige Rollins, Stephanie Siebert and Sarah Wilson.

The Mariners outscored many of their competitors at the regional round and were second of the six teams that qualified for the state championships, scheduled to be held Saturday, February 6, at the Augusta Civic Center. The Class A and D competitions will begin at 10 a.m.

Larsen said she is excited about her team’s performance and title, and looks forward to working with the team for the next two weeks to prepare to bring home the gold.
