The fifth annual WinterFest, sponsored by the Healthy Island Project, kicks off Friday, January 22, with a soup/chowder cookoff, bread bakeoff and cookie bakeoff at the Island elementary school at 5:30 p.m. This will be followed by a performance by Shana Barry and the Fofers (which are large art dolls). While best for small people, it has been reported that adults will enjoy this show as well. Events throughout the entire weekend are free. The full schedule is printed in this issue. Notable among the highlights this year is the opportunity to build an igloo with Dr. Bert Yankielun on Saturday at 10 a.m. on the Stonington ball field. “Dr. Why” will conduct a hands-on workshop, snow permitting. A news release reports that his igloo building workshops are well known and the workshop he has conducted for the past 20 years in Norwich, Vt., at the Montshire Museum of Science has been voted by the Vermont Chamber of Commerce as one of Vermont’s Top 10 Winter Events, according to an HIP press release. It has been mentioned in Family Fun Magazine, Vermont Life Magazine and featured in the New York Times. All ages are welcome to participate. On Saturday evening, a cookout at the community center and fireworks on the ball field will precede a dance at the Opera House with music by a new local band, Christel’s Blue Persuasions. The dance is family-friendly. Other events will include a pet photo contest, a live nature presentation by Birdsacre, Asian brush painting with Frederica Marshall, cribbage and Yahtzee tournaments and information booths at the community center. WinterFest events conclude Sunday with double elimination basketball games at the community center. Age groups are 30 and above, and 29 and under. All teams are welcome—men, women, friends and neighbors. Participants must be ninth grade and above to play. For more information, call 367-6332 or visit www.healthyislandproject.org.
